Marsh: flat, very fertile, often flooded wetland behind the dikes

Type of wetland which can often be found at the edges of streams and of the coastline. Levees often protect it from floods. It exists only where located close enough to the sho- reline that the motion of the tides can affect it and sporadi- cally cover it with water.
